Why do most forex brokers choose to expand overseas?

In addition to the choice of platform to build, the environment in which a forex broker operates also influences its development. We can observe that in the forex market, most forex brokers choose to expand overseas. What exactly are the reasons behind this?

First, the size of the market is one reason.

Compared to overseas foreign exchange markets, China’s domestic foreign exchange market got off to a late start. It was not until 1994, when China implemented major reforms to its foreign exchange management system, established the China Foreign Exchange Trading Center, and created a unified nationwide interbank foreign exchange market, that China’s foreign exchange market began to develop. In contrast, overseas foreign exchange markets were established following the collapse of the Bretton Woods system in 1973 and have a history of nearly 50 years of development. Their market size and level of maturity far exceed those of China’s domestic foreign exchange market.

China’s foreign exchange market is relatively young and less mature, and the volume of trading in this market is relatively small, which to some extent has constrained the development of China’s foreign exchange economy.

Second, the markets vary in terms of their level of development.

Compared to overseas foreign exchange markets, China’s foreign exchange market still lags behind to some extent . The trading volume in China’s foreign exchange market is small, and the trading participants are limited, with banks playing the dominant role; the range of trading products is relatively narrow, and derivatives—which are highly popular in financial markets —account for a low proportion of the foreign exchange market; furthermore, trading in China’s foreign exchange market is primarily conducted in RMB and USD, resulting in a relatively limited range of currencies. In contrast, foreign exchange markets abroad have a long history and have already passed their growth phase; they are relatively mature and hold significant influence and pricing power over many financial products. As a result, foreign exchange markets abroad can offer forex brokers more opportunities for growth.

Third, there is still no regulatory framework in place in China for foreign exchange brokers.

China’s foreign exchange market has not yet been opened to the outside world, and the development opportunities available to forex brokers are relatively limited compared to those abroad. Furthermore, the legal framework governing China’s foreign exchange market is not yet fully developed; regulatory capacity remains relatively weak, and coordination mechanisms are still underdeveloped.

There are currently more than 30 foreign exchange markets worldwide. The most important ones include London, New York, Paris, Tokyo, Switzerland, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Each has its own unique characteristics and is located in a different country or region. With high trading volumes and international influence, these markets are interconnected, forming a unified global foreign exchange market.

There are numerous overseas foreign exchange markets, offering a wide range of options.Overseas markets are characterized by high activity, large trading volumes, a wide variety of products, and a diverse range of tradable currencies. For forex brokers, these markets offer greater opportunities for growth and are more conducive to their own development. Given their more robust systems and more mature development, and after considering all factors, most forex brokers choose to expand into overseas markets.
