Currently, the foreign exchange market continues to expand, with average daily global trading volume reaching nearly $6 trillion, and the range of market participants is growing ever wider. The robust growth of the foreign exchange market is driving the digitization of foreign exchange trading and continuous innovation in trading systems. With the rapid rise of information technologies such as blockchain, big data, and cloud computing, a wave of financial digitization is underway, and both banks and non-bank foreign exchange dealers are attempting to use advanced technologies to reshape foreign exchange trading models.
When discussing the digital transformation of foreign exchange operations, one cannot help but mention blockchain, a topic widely discussed today. Blockchain is a chain-like structure composed of countless blocks arranged in chronological order. The header of each block records the information from the previous block and is stamped with a timestamp, ensuring that the entire blockchain is traceable.Blockchain is decentralized; nodes on the chain maintain distributed ledgers and collectively enforce the blockchain’s consensus mechanism.
The decentralized nature of blockchain aligns perfectly with the open nature of the global foreign exchange market, and the application of blockchain technology can also make foreign exchange trading more secure.
(1) Data Encryption
FBS is an international forex trading platform and one of the world’s leading forex trading platforms. However, an investigation revealed that FBS’s servers were not protected by encryption, allowing anyone to access FBS’s information. This vulnerability ultimately led to devastating consequences. In 2021, more than 16 billion records were leaked from the FBS system, including user identification information, transaction data, and more. This data breach could jeopardize the financial security—and even the personal safety—of its users.
The application of blockchain technology appears to be an effective solution to this problem.Digital signatures and homomorphic encryption technologies can safeguard the privacy of information and the security of transaction data on blockchain nodes. Every node on the chain is assigned a digital identity, a public key, and a private key. When a transaction occurs, the sender uses their private key to perform homomorphic encryption on the data, which is then transmitted in ciphertext form.Upon receiving the data, the recipient decrypts it using their public key. Hackers without verified digital identities will be unable to access or decrypt users’ transaction data and identity information, thereby ensuring information security.
(2) Tamper-proof
Transaction records in a blockchain system are tamper-proof.Since all authorized nodes can receive transaction information, and the details of each transaction are converted into a unique hash value using a hashing algorithm and stored in the next block—which is then linked to the previous blocks—no single node can arbitrarily alter the data on the chain; in other words, it is extremely difficult for any node to modify the data on the chain. When foreign exchange regulators conduct audits of the brokers they oversee, they are able to obtain completely accurate raw data. Brokers cannot conceal their non-compliant behavior by tampering with the data.
(3) Increased Transparency
At its core, blockchain is a distributed ledger in which all nodes on the chain collectively maintain the records, and any authorized node can view the data on the chain. As nodes on the chain, traders can view transaction information at any time and stay informed about market conditions, thereby breaking down information barriers in the market. As a result, the price mechanism can function more effectively, and trading efficiency in the foreign exchange market will also improve.
Although “blockchain + foreign exchange” is currently attracting increasing attention, many institutions remain cautious and are taking a wait-and-see approach to adopting blockchain for foreign exchange trading. The application of blockchain technology may also present new challenges for regulators, and relevant laws still lag behind to some extent. Given these limitations, foreign exchange trading models are likely to evolve toward a hybrid approach that combines on-chain and off-chain elements.
