After completing numerous forex trades, you may have become a skilled investor; however, you might not realize that each of your forex trades isn’t a direct bet against another person—there’s also an “intermediary” involved in the transaction: the forex broker. So what exactly is a forex broker, why do they exist, and how should we choose one? This article will answer these questions for you.
To help you understand what a forex broker is, this article will use a simple example. One day, you decide to go downstairs to buy some fruit. There happens to be a fruit stand downstairs, but the fruit there is actually sourced from fruit farmers in various counties. Since the fruit stand isn’t running a charity, the listed price must be higher than the cost price, and you end up purchasing the fruit at that listed price, completing the transaction. If we look at a complete forex transaction, you—the person buying the fruit—are the forex investor; the fruit vendor is the forex broker; the profit earned from reselling the fruit is the forex brokerage fee; and the fruit farmers are the true clearing agents for this transaction—typically major international banks.
So you might be wondering, why not bypass the forex broker altogether and trade forex directly?First, there’s the issue of cost. Just like in the example of buying fruit—why wouldn’t you go to every county to shop around and pick out the best and cheapest fruit? The reason is that the cost would be too high; it’s better to buy directly from a fruit vendor and leave the task of selecting fruit—which is both specialized and troublesome—to the vendor.Second is the issue of capital. If you want to trade directly with a foreign exchange bank, you must have a huge amount of capital to qualify. Therefore, most small and medium-sized investors still need to go through a forex broker to invest in the foreign exchange market.
So the question is, how should we choose a broker? In fact, there is more than one type of forex broker, and the risks associated with each type vary significantly.

The first type is known as a single market maker. These brokers may charge you only a minimal commission—or even attract investors by advertising “zero commission.” So, are these market makers really just doing “charity”?Of course not. While acting as brokers, they also serve as liquidity providers—meaning the broker is essentially betting against the investor. Some highly skilled investors may already be eager to give it a try, but unfortunately, the platform can simply widen the spread to ensure it never loses. Therefore, you should exercise caution when choosing this type of forex broker.
The second type is known as a pure commission-based broker. These forex brokers are essentially “middlemen” who have no financial stake in whether you profit or lose on any of your forex trades,These brokers truly charge only a commission, but they inevitably charge higher trading fees, as setting up a forex trading platform remains a costly endeavor at present.
Therefore, only by fully understanding what a forex broker is and why they exist will you be able to choose the forex broker that is truly right for you.
