Trading hours in the foreign exchange market include both periods of high trading activity and periods of low trading activity. In forex trading, as long as there is volatility, there are opportunities to profit. The more active the market and the greater the volatility, the more favorable the conditions are for traders. Therefore, understanding forex trading hours and capitalizing on prime trading times can improve trading efficiency, allowing us to achieve more with less effort.
I. Forex Trading Sessions
The foreign exchange market operates 24 hours a day without interruption. As shown in the figure below, due to the different geographical locations of financial centers around the world, there are time zone differences between the Asian, European, and American trading sessions. This creates a continuous 24-hour foreign exchange market, with many trading sessions overlapping.

Taking Beijing Standard Time (Winter) as an example: at 4:00 a.m., the Wellington market opens, marking the start of a new day of forex trading; At 6:00, the Sydney forex market opens; at 8:00, the Tokyo forex market opens; at 9:00, the Hong Kong forex market opens; at 14:00, the Frankfurt forex market opens;at 4:30 p.m., the London market opens; at 9:20 p.m., the New York market opens and closes at 4:00 a.m., ending the day’s trading.
II. Optimal Trading Hours for Forex
The forex market operates 24 hours a day, but human energy is limited—it’s impossible to stay glued to the computer every moment waiting to trade. Therefore, we need to capitalize on the prime trading hours to execute trades efficiently.
1. Trade during the overlapping hours of the foreign exchange markets. This is because trading is more active during these overlapping periods; for example, trade during the overlap between the Asian and European sessions (2:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m.) and during the overlap between the European and American sessions (8:00 p.m.–12:00 a.m.).
2. Trade during the overlapping hours of the London and New York forex markets (8:00 PM–12:00 AM).The London and New York forex markets are the world’s largest and most active, serving as hubs for international banking transactions. Since the trading hours of these two markets overlap during this period, it represents the prime time for forex trading and is highly suitable for traders.
3. The middle of the week (Tuesday through Thursday) is a relatively active trading period, making it suitable for trading. Therefore, 8:00 PM to midnight is the prime time for forex trading. For Chinese forex traders, this coincides with their evening downtime after work, allowing them to trade with confidence. However, it is important to note that trading volume is high during this period and exchange rates fluctuate sharply, so traders must closely monitor market movements.
III. Times to Avoid Trading in the Foreign Exchange Market
1. Fridays. Since the market is closed on Saturdays and Sundays, any unexpected news on Friday can significantly increase trading risks.
2. Holidays. When major holidays approach, many individual and institutional investors reduce their trading activity, and some banks may close for the holiday. Trading is sluggish during these periods, liquidity is low, and conditions are generally unsuitable for trading.
3. Major Events. When major events occur, the risks of entering the market are relatively high. Although such events present both challenges and opportunities, the risks remain significant without mature skills and experience. For example, the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020 caused the euro-to-dollar exchange rate (as well as those of other major global currencies) to plummet and surge sharply; this uncertainty significantly increased trading risks.
