Forex option trading strategies serve as a guiding framework for traders; only by mastering this mindset can theory effectively guide practice. Therefore, building on the fundamentals of forex option trading strategies, this article presents an advanced version of the at-the-money straddle strategy.
Among basic foreign exchange option trading strategies, simultaneously buying or selling call options and put options to form a combination is known as a straddle. When these options are bought or sold at the same strike price, it is called a straddle at the same strike price. A straddle at the same strike price is also known as a straddle option strategy and is a type of combination option strategy.Depending on the direction of the trade, at-the-money straddle trading can be further classified into a long at-the-money straddle and a short at-the-money straddle.
1. Buy at the same price and make a knock-to-win trade
A buy par-to-knock trade means buying both call and put options at the same agreed price. This trading strategy is suitable for future market exchange rates that will fluctuate sharply, causing sharp rises or falls. If the exchange rate rises sharply, executing a call option and not executing a put option yields a greater return than the premium of both options; If the exchange rate drops sharply, executing a put option and not executing a call option yields a profit greater than the premium of both options; When the market is stable and the exchange rate does not fluctuate sharply, the maximum loss is the premium of these two options.
The profit and loss formula is:
1. Maximum loss = call option premium + put option premium
2. Break-even point 1 = contract price – total option premium
3. Break-even point 2 = contract price + total option premium
For example, if a trader buys a call and put option at a contract price of 1 euro = 1.1452 USD, the option premiums are 1 euro = 0.05 USD and 1 EUR = 0.03 USD respectively. The profit and loss are:
Maximum loss = -0.03 – 0.05 = -0.08
Break-even point 1 = 1.1452 – 0.08 = 1.0652
Break-even point 2 = 1.1452 + 0.08 = 1.2252
The profit and loss chart is as follows:

Therefore, in markets with high exchange rate volatility—whether prices are rising or falling sharply—using a “buy-at-the-same-price” matched-trade strategy can yield substantial profits, with the maximum loss being the premium paid for the two options traded.
2. Sell-to-win transactions at the same price
A bet-and-sell sell at the same price means selling both call and put options at the same agreed price. This trading strategy is suitable for future market exchange rate fluctuations that are relatively stable, with no sharp fluctuations. The maximum profit is the premium of these two options, while the losses can be infinite. Therefore, the risks of this strategy are quite high. Investors choosing it must have a strong sense of future market conditions.
The profit and loss formula is:
1. Maximum profit = call option premium + put option premium
2. Break-even point 1 = contract price – total option premium
3. Break-even point 2 = contract price + total option premium
For example, a trader sells a call option and a put option at a contract price of 1 euro = 1.1452 USD, with option premiums of 1 euro = 0.05 USD and 1 EUR = 0.03 USD respectively. The profit and loss are:
Maximum profit = 0.03 + 0.05 = 0.08
Break-even point 1 = 1.1452 – 0.08 = 1.0652
Break-even point 2 = 1.1452 + 0.08 = 1.2252
The profit and loss chart is as follows:
