I. The Concept of Forex Margin Trading
Forex margin trading, also known as forex margin trading and commonly referred to as “forex trading, ” is based on the principle of leveraged investment. Investors enter into contracts to buy or sell foreign currencies; after depositing a certain amount of margin (generally no more than 10%), they can trade hundreds of thousands or even millions in foreign currencies using a specific leverage ratio.
II. Calculating Profits and Losses in Forex Margin Trading
- Formula for calculating profit and loss in an indirectly quoted currency: (Sell Price – Buy Price) × Contract Size × Number of Contracts = ×× USD;
- Formula for calculating profit and loss in a currency quoted directly: (Sell Price – Buy Price) / Settlement Price × Contract Size × Number of Contracts = ×× USD (In foreign exchange trading, one contract is generally 100,000).
For example, suppose you buy Japanese yen when the exchange rate is 1 U.S. dollar to 135.00 Japanese yen, with a leverage ratio of 1:100, meaning the margin requirement is only 1 percent.

From the above analysis, it can be seen that in terms of the amounts of profits and losses from trading, spot trading and forex margin trading are exactly the same; the only difference lies in the amount of capital invested by the trader.In spot trading, one must invest $100,000 to trade 13,500,000 yen, whereas with forex margin trading, only $1,000 is required. The difference in the amounts invested is 100-fold—meaning the leverage ratio is 100:1—but the resulting gains and losses are exactly the same.
III. Case Studies in Forex Margin Trading
Taking the market conditions during the 2020 pandemic as an example, Mr . Li invested $300 in forex margin trading, choosing a leverage ratio of 1:400. He initially traded 0.1 lots with his $300, while managing his positions carefully. During the major outbreak of the pandemic in 2020, the EUR/USD currency pair experienced sharp fluctuations,The pandemic also led to an economic downturn in Europe and the U.S., and Mr. Li predicted that EUR/USD would continue to consolidate within a range for some time. So, on March 27, 2020, Mr. Li opened a short position of 0.1 lots on EUR/USD (as shown in the figure below) and closed the position on April 6, 2020—a total of 11 days. How much profit did he make?Let’s do the math.

1.1141 – 1.0076 = 0.1065, which means that Mr. Li made a profit of nearly 1,065 pips on his foreign exchange investment over 11 days. Since 0.1 standard lot—or 1 pip—is worth $1, Mr. Li realized a profit of $1,065.
Similarly, Mr. Li used $1,365 to trade 3 lots (here, Mr. Li used only a small portion of his position for trading, reserving the rest to hedge against price fluctuations; if there is a breakout from the consolidation pattern with high volume, he would promptly cut losses and liquidate the position—this approach remains relatively safe, and all his trades follow this strategy).
The position was closed by selling on April 14, 2020: 3x(1.0978–1.0076) × 10 = $27,060 (one standard lot, $10 per pip); the balance reached $28,000!On April 14, 2020, I sold 40 lots with $28,000 in capital and closed the position on April 24, 2020, for 40 × (1.0978 – 1.0771) × 10 = $82,800;On April 24, 2020, 100 lots were bought and closed out on May 1, 2020, yielding a profit of 150 × (1.0993 – 1.0771) × 10 = $222,000; the account balance has reached $332,800!
Sold 300 contracts on May 1, 2020, and closed the position on May 7, 2020. 300 × (1.0993 – 1.0773) × 10 = $660,000; the total funds have reached $992,800!On May 7, 2020, I bought 900 contracts and closed the position on May 20, 2020, realizing a profit of 900 × (1.0985 – 1.0773) × 10 = $1.908 million.bringing the total capital to $2,900,800—a 9,669-fold increase in less than two months!
Some may ask, “What if you incur a loss?” Let’s compare the scenarios: even if Mr. Li had lost his entire investment, his loss would have been only $300 (approximately 2,100 RMB). Compared to a profit of $2,900,800 (approximately 20,305,600 RMB), it’s clear which outcome is better.
