Did you know that Bitcoin can just vanish into thin air?

Did you know that Bitcoin can just vanish into thin air? *The Big Bang Theory* explored this very topic: Sheldon and his three roommates—Raj, Howard, and Leonard—lost the Bitcoin they had stored on a USB drive. Cases of lost Bitcoin aren’t limited to TV shows—this kind of thing happens in real life, too.

Will Bitcoin Disappear Out of Nowhere?

Cases of Cryptocurrencies That Have Disappeared

According to a data report from Chainalysis, a digital firm that researches Bitcoin and blockchain, as many as 3.79 million Bitcoin have been permanently lost worldwide—accounting for approximately 23 percent of the current total supply. This is equivalent to $30 billion vanishing into the digital abyss. How did this happen?

A scene from *The Big Bang Theory* highlights just how easy it is to lose Bitcoin, and losing a wallet is likely one of the most common ways to lose it. Chainalysis identifies the most common status for lost Bitcoin as “no longer in circulation,” meaning these Bitcoin were mined between 2 and 7 years ago and were lost due to the holders’ negligence in safeguarding them. These bitcoins were owned and lost by people known as “hodlers,” who are long-term Bitcoin holders. Their losses total as many as 2.56 million bitcoins, valued at a staggering $20 billion. Online, it’s easy to find all sorts of heartbreaking stories from “hodlers” about how they lost their bitcoins.

The second most common cause of Bitcoin loss involves coins mined at the very beginning. Chainalysis states that these early coins—those held by Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto—have been lost forever. This holdings amount to 1 million Bitcoin; if these coins were lost, it would represent a loss of over $8 billion.

Chainalysis has not provided any explanation as to why or how the Bitcoin was lost. These original coins were actually designed to launch and stimulate mining activity. Some speculate that the Bitcoin was simply removed from the blockchain; while still accessible, it has lost its liquidity. It has been reported that Satoshi Nakamoto still holds other bitcoins stored in various wallets that remain in circulation.

In addition, 121,300 bitcoins were lost due to trading activity, and 71,200 were lost by “strategic investors” (investors who hold bitcoins for 1–2 years). The reason the loss amounts in these cases are significantly lower than those described earlier is simple: these activities represent the recent use of bitcoins.

Not only have these bitcoins been lost for a shorter period of time, but their value is also significantly higher than that of bitcoins held by hoarders and miners. Therefore, compared to a bitcoin worth $0.50, people tend to be much more cautious with a bitcoin worth $1,500.

Will the loss of so many bitcoins distort the value of the remaining bitcoins? Has the market priced in this loss, or does it recognize that the potential supply of bitcoins is lower than expected? When calculating Bitcoin’s market capitalization, the value is based on the total supply of bitcoins, not the remaining circulating supply. However, judging by current market behavior, Bitcoin’s price today aligns more closely with the economics of supply and demand, which means that the lost Bitcoins have indirectly boosted its value.

So, can we learn anything from the lost bitcoins? Rather than focusing on current technological advancements, you should be more concerned about where you store your bitcoins.
