MM, STP, and ECN Models in Forex Trading Platforms

In the foreign exchange market, it is common to see many forex brokers advertise themselves as ECN platforms, and there are indeed many investors in the market who specifically seek out ECN platforms, while disregarding other MM and STP models. So, what exactly are the differences between the MM, STP, and ECM models currently found in forex platforms? Why do so many investors have a particular fondness for ECM, and why do brokers use it as a selling point?

An MM-model forex platform is essentially a market maker (MM). Under this model, the market maker acts as the counterparty to the client, executing trades opposite to the client’s positions—when the client buys or sells, the platform sells or buys.Precisely because of this, market makers can manipulate trading prices to a certain extent. The bid and ask prices clients receive are not entirely consistent with those in the interbank foreign exchange market. Generally, market makers add a certain spread to the interbank foreign exchange prices, using this spread to generate risk-free income.Of course, this spread is usually fixed, and the client’s actual trading price will not differ significantly from the interbank foreign exchange quotes. After all, with so many forex brokers in the market, even a slight deviation would naturally cause clients to steer clear. In MM-model forex trading, market makers can efficiently match trades, improve the efficiency of the forex market, and enable even smaller-scale transactions to be executed. This facilitates participation by small and medium-sized investors and significantly enhances market activity.

The STP model, short for Straight Through Processing, operates without the involvement of a dealing desk (No Dealing Desk, NDD). Clients trading forex can execute trades immediately at real-time market prices.During the trading process, the platform first forwards the client’s order directly to liquidity providers (typically banks, institutions, or other specialized platforms). The platform then selects the most favorable quote from among these liquidity providers to execute the trade. In the STP model, the platform earns its revenue from the spread between the client’s price and the liquidity provider’s price, rather than from transaction fees. Larger, well-capitalized forex brokers typically work with multiple liquidity providers, which means they can achieve higher trading volumes and greater trading efficiency. In the STP model, some forex platforms may also categorize clients. For example, trades placed by clients with strong investment performance are routed directly to liquidity providers, where the client’s buy or sell order is executed instantly, and the platform then trades in the same direction with the liquidity provider;for clients with poor investment performance, however, the platform may use a market-making model to match their trades internally, thereby profiting from the losses incurred by these clients.

Finally, the ECN (Electronic Communications Network) model is much simpler. An ECN platform facilitates the matching of forex trades between clients—that is, client-to-client trading—in which the broker does not participate in the transactions but merely charges a small transaction fee (which is generally fixed, such as $6 per standard lot). Therefore, ECN platforms require the participation of multiple parties—including banks, institutions, the foreign exchange market, and technology providers—to ensure the timely and accurate transmission of trade information and to execute trades.Since the platform does not interfere excessively with trading prices and derives its profits solely from transaction commissions—neither floating nor fixed spreads—trading becomes more open and transparent for clients. This is likely why so many investors have a particular fondness for ECN platforms. However, because there are no market makers or liquidity providers involved, trades that are too small or too large may fail to execute, potentially resulting in re-quotes or slippage.

The above provides an introduction to the three types of forex platforms. The table below offers a more intuitive overview of the MM, STP, and ECN models used in forex platforms:
