    What are binary options?

The foreign exchange market offers a wide variety of trading products, including spot forex, forex futures, forex forwards, forex swaps, and currency swaps; binary options are also one of the many forex trading instruments available. For many investors unfamiliar with binary options trading, it may initially seem like a complex foreign exchange product, but this is not the case. In fact, binary options are arguably the simplest form of trading among the many foreign exchange products and trading instruments available.

First, binary options—like other financial derivatives —are based on a specific underlying asset. The range of underlying assets is very broad, covering stocks, foreign exchange, stock indices, and numerous commodity futures. Although they are called “options,” whether an investor buys a call or put binary option, it does not grant the investor the right to buy or sell the underlying asset;but merely determines whether the investor makes a profit or a loss based on whether the price of the underlying asset has risen or fallen by the expiration date. The reason binary options trading is considered simple is that the return is based solely on the direction of the underlying asset’s price movement, without the need to focus on the magnitude of the price change. For example, with a call binary option, if the price of the underlying asset at expiration is higher than the price at the time the option was purchased—even by as little as 0.01%—the investor receives the full agreed-upon amount (specified in the trading contract, typically 70%–80% of the investment amount),Conversely, the investor loses the agreed-upon amount (as specified in the trading contract, typically 85% of the investment amount).

Unlike other traditional derivatives, exchanges do not charge transaction fees for binary options trading. For many investors who are concerned about transaction costs, this type of product—which incurs no transaction costs—is particularly appealing.Investors also do not need to possess highly specialized analytical tools to determine the extent to which the underlying asset’s price will rise or fall by the option’s expiration date; they simply need to assess the future price trend of the underlying asset. If they anticipate that the price of the underlying asset will rise, they choose a call option; if they anticipate that the price will fall, they choose a put option. The amount of profit or loss at option expiration is also specified in the trading contract, typically as a fixed percentage of the transaction amount—for example, a profit of 80% of the transaction amount or a loss of 85% of the transaction amount. Consequently, the final profit or loss for investors is predetermined.

From this, we can also see the characteristics of binary options compared to other traditional financial derivatives: First, the trading process is simple—investors do not need to focus on the specific magnitude of price fluctuations in the underlying asset but only need to determine whether the price will rise or fall; second, the risk is fixed—the returns or losses on binary options are predetermined at a fixed ratio;third, low transaction costs—exchanges generally do not charge transaction fees for these trades, thereby reducing investors’ transaction costs.

Finally, although binary options trading is simple and flexible, offering investors greater flexibility, it also involves numerous risks that require caution. For example, since binary options focus on the upward or downward price trends of underlying assets, some unscrupulous trading platforms may profit by manipulating prices. Furthermore, certain trading platforms pose significant default risks, which can also pose a major threat to investors’ financial security. Therefore, a secure and compliant platform is the foundation and prerequisite for attracting more investors.
