    Calculating Profits and Losses on Forex Margin Trading When Setting Up a Forex Trading Platform

    Forex margin trading, also known as forex margin trading and commonly referred to as “forex trading,” is based on the principle of leveraged investing,Investors enter into a contract with financial companies specializing in foreign exchange trading to authorize the trading of foreign exchange. By depositing a certain percentage of margin (generally not exceeding 10%), they can trade hundreds of thousands or even millions in foreign exchange based on a specific leverage ratio.

    Forex margin trading has the following characteristics:

    • Forex margin trading uses leverage to turn a small investment into a potentially large return and offers flexible trading options (traders can choose their own leverage ratio through a forex broker, typically ranging from 1:100 to 500);
    • The foreign exchange margin trading market is intangible and unregulated; transactions take place directly between clients and banks, without intermediaries such as exchanges;
    • Forex margin trading has no expiration date, and traders can hold positions indefinitely;
    • The forex margin trading market is massive and has a large number of participants;
    • Forex margin trading offers a wide variety of currencies; all convertible currencies can be traded;
    • Forex margin trading operates 24 hours a day without interruption;
    • In forex margin trading, interest rate differentials between various currencies must be calculated, and financial institutions must either pay these amounts to clients or deduct them from clients’ margin accounts;

    From the concept and characteristics of forex margin trading, we can see that it offers advantages such as high profit potential, flexible trading hours, the ability to use leverage to turn a small investment into a large return, flexible trading methods, manageable risk, a large market, and high liquidity—advantages that other investment markets cannot match. Given these many advantages, how should one go about trading?Forex margin trading is not permitted in China, so you cannot open a forex margin trading account domestically; however, you can choose an international forex broker to conduct your trades.

    So how are profits and losses calculated in forex margin trading?
    (1) Formula for calculating profits and losses in an indirect quotation: (Sell Price – Buy Price) × Contract Size × Number of Contracts = ×× USD;
    (2) Profit and loss calculation formula for direct quotation currencies: (Sell Price – Buy Price) / Settlement Price × Contract Size × Number of Contracts = ×× USD (In forex trading, one contract is generally 100,000 units.)

    Next, let’s look at a specific example to understand how profits and losses are calculated in forex margin trading.
    Suppose you buy Japanese yen when the exchange rate is 1 U.S. dollar to 135.00 yen, with a leverage ratio of 1:100, meaning the margin requirement is only 1%.

    From the above analysis, it can be seen that the amounts of profits and losses in spot trading and forex margin trading are exactly the same; the only difference lies in the amount of capital invested by the trader. In spot trading, a trader must invest $100,000 to trade 13,500,000 yen, whereas with forex margin trading, only $1,000 is required.The difference in the amount invested is 100-fold—meaning the leverage ratio is 100:1—but the resulting gains and losses are exactly the same. Therefore, forex margin trading offers investors the potential for higher returns with a smaller investment, making it well-suited for the general public, as it allows traders to generate greater profits with relatively little capital.

    However, special caution is required when engaging in margin trading. Although the margin amount is small, it actually leverages a very large amount of capital. Given the significant volatility of exchange rates in the foreign exchange market, if an investor misjudges the direction of the market, they can easily suffer a margin call, resulting in the total loss of their margin.
