STP is a type of forex trading model, standing for Straight Through Processing. Under this model, the platform routes clients’ orders directly to liquidity providers without any intervention, resulting in genuine trades rather than internal hedging within the platform (i.e., no market-making);For clients, this means they can view the prevailing market prices in the forex market and have the authority to decide whether to execute orders immediately. Since orders do not need to be processed through the trading platform, delays can be avoided.
On STP-mode platforms, brokers typically have multiple liquidity providers, and the quotes from each liquidity provider vary. Therefore, STP brokers select the best bid and ask prices from among these liquidity providers to match orders, then add a small markup—that is, they earn a spread—to execute the trade.Therefore, spreads in the STP model are variable. For both brokers and clients, the more liquidity providers there are—or the higher their quality—the better the order liquidity, the faster orders are executed, and the lower the spreads tend to be.However, some STP brokers have only one liquidity provider, which acts as the sole counterparty to client trades. In this case, prices are entirely determined by that single liquidity provider, and the spread is relatively fixed.
Now that we understand what the STP protocol is, let’s take a look at its advantages and disadvantages:
I. Advantages of the STP Trading Model:
1. Strong safeguards for client funds: Under the STP model, client funds are held by liquidity providers (such as major banks) rather than within the platform itself. The broker does not intervene in the trading process, thereby maximizing the security of client funds;
2. Fairness: Since trades in the STP model are not executed internally on the platform, the platform and the client are not on opposing sides when it comes to profits; STP brokers work to help clients make profits;
3. Lower transaction costs: By trading directly with liquidity providers such as major international banks, without intermediary platforms, transaction costs are lower.
II. Disadvantages of the STP Trading Model:
In STP mode, quotes come from the foreign exchange market rather than the platform itself. This trading model is relatively fair to clients. However, under this model, when there is a large volume of orders or significant fluctuations in exchange rates, even if a client places an order, it may remain pending because the bank’s system cannot confirm it in a timely manner.
That concludes our introduction to the STP trading model in forex, along with its advantages and disadvantages. We hope you find this helpful.
