In forex trading, whether you’re a broker, an IB, or a trader, you’re no stranger to rebates.Generally speaking, rebates can be divided into two types: first, brokers return a certain percentage of the commissions (spreads) they earn to IBs; second, IBs pass on the rebates they receive from the broker’s platform to their own clients.
Why don’t brokers simply return commissions to trading clients on a proportional basis? In the forex industry, most forex brokers actually prefer to return commissions to clients by first paying them to Introducing Brokers (IBs), who then pass the commissions on to the clients. On the one hand, this is because brokers often do not acquire clients directly through their own channels but instead rely on intermediary IBs to bring in clients. IBs are also able to identify high-quality clients from among many potential prospects. By paying rebates to IBs, brokers can increase the IBs’ motivation to expand their business—after all, the clients’ trading activity is directly linked to the IBs’ compensation.and the broker’s rebates constitute the primary source of an IB’s income. On the other hand, for both clients and IBs, when clients choose an IB, they often do so based on trust in the IB—including their expertise in forex trading, and the trust built through business communication. Beyond meeting clients’ basic service needs, IBs passing on rebates to clients can further reduce clients’ trading costs, bringing tangible benefits to clients while also helping IBs better retain clients and enhance their business development capabilities.
For forex brokers, the rebate system does offer many benefits—such as boosting IB motivation and attracting more high-quality clients—but at the same time, this system also has certain drawbacks.
Commission rebates paid by brokers mean a decline in the platform’s own revenue,For brokers, controlling operational costs—such as management and sales expenses—is crucial during platform operations. Consequently, rebates have become a form of price war among brokers, who offer higher rebate rates to increase their appeal and gain a competitive edge. However, in reality, excessively high rebates directly result in a decline in the platform’s own revenue and profitability. Faced with a significant portion of operating costs, brokers need to reasonably control rebate levels and maintain a reasonable rebate rate to ensure they can sustain a reasonable profit margin during their operations, rather than blindly engaging in price wars with other competitors.
By the same token, this kind of price war also exists among IBs; after all, IBs derive their income from rebates paid by brokerage firms, so they, too, need to strike a balance between the brokerage firm and the client.
Finally, within this rebate mechanism, there is, to a greater or lesser extent, some room for arbitrage, which can easily lead to various forms of fake trading. For example, if the rebate amount is set at a certain level, as long as the exchange’s losses remain below that level, traders can profit from the difference between the rebate and the losses through large-volume, high-frequency trading. When trading volume is very high, this can easily result in significant losses for the brokerage firm.Of course, while this opportunity exists in theory—and although such situations are rare in practice—it still warrants attention.
From this, we can see that rebates can boost IBs’ enthusiasm for business development and bring more high-quality clients to brokers. At the same time, they also fuel a price war among industry peers. Both brokers and IBs need to strike a reasonable balance between revenue and rebate expenses to maintain a reasonable profit margin, which is essential for their continued survival in the foreign exchange market.
